I just put the kids down for naps, and I am sitting here thinking what should I do now. There are definitely quite a few things to choose from. There is the dishwasher that needs unloading, dishes in the sink from breakfast and lunch, almost every room needs some tidying up, the floors need to be swept, mopped and vacuumed. Our suitcases still need to be unpacked and everything put away, and of course there is some laundry that needs to be put in the washer, some taken out of the dryer and folded and some put away, I'm sure I could go on, but all I can think about right now is a nap.
I'm so tired. Ava had a bad dream at 4 AM last night, which made Gia think it was surely time to get up. Thankfully she understood that wasn't the case about 30 minutes later, giving me a little more time to sleep. Lately, sleep seems to be seldom and very interrupted. It's worth it, I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, because I know I chose to be a mom and a mom of three ages three and under. I really wouldn't have it any other way, but sometimes I just think back to what it was like when I could sleep not only 7 hours straight but 12 hours straight (granted, that was back in the summers of college, which was over 5 years ago).
At my Mom's Bible study group yesterday we talked about identity and how sometimes we tend to lose that when we become moms or wives. We are so busy trying to meet the needs of everyone that we forget to meet our own needs, and end up losing ourselves. I think I try to be that supermom you hear about, the one that somehow can do it all, and without any sleep or complaints. I tell you I am far from that "supermom" capability. I think we are accomplishing so much, even without being able to complete those never ending to do lists, and we need to remind ourselves of that. If we don't take the time to take care of ourselves, we become not only tired and worn out, but sometimes even depressed and this actually ends up shaping how we parent. I know when I'm exhausted and frustrated from not doing what I feel like should be getting done I get more impatient, quick to react, and emotional.
It's when I am more rested, get a shower (even if it is after Steve gets home from work), dressed (as a mom I have definitely had my fair share of PJ days), and have some make up on that I feel better. More importantly, when I choose to get up early and spend the first half hour to hour (even fifteen minutes if thats all I get) in my morning with my Bible praying and reflecting on God's word that my days seem to be best. I feel refreshed and ready to take on whatever comes my way that day because it's easier for me to remember I'm not doing it alone, that He is with me.
Not only that, but that He did not make me to be perfect - that is why God sent His son. I am only human, and not perfect by any means, so if I don't get it all done, it's okay, and that I should take that nap I'm debating about right now, because it makes me feel better, stay healthier and in turn makes me a better mom. What we are doing today with our kids may not always give us immediate results but will be reflected in who they become and who they are in 5, 10, or 15 years, and really does make it worth it. Okay I'm off to take a quick cat nap.
Here are some pictures of Gia I took yesterday, enjoy!
